LINK Energy Esperance Open Report

Thursday, 04 March 2010

A strong contingent of players from metropolitan areas and country areas of Western Australia congregated to Esperance to compete in the 2010 LINK Energy Esperance Open over the recent long weekend (February 27 – March 1).

The Mens Open was conducted as a PSA Closed Satellite event. The Australian number 9 ranked player Mike Corren (South Australia) was the top seed. Mike’s experience (he has won 24 PSA titles) proved too strong and he took out the title after defeating Blue Gum’s Jason Patmore in the final.

Rachel Lee from Mirrabooka won the Ladies Open. She defeated Jenna Dracup (Mullaloo) in a hard fought five game match to decide the winner of the round robin competition.

The Junior A event was dominated by Mullaloo players with Walter Koteka winning the event after defeating Jack Molloy, with Walter’s brother Kane finishing in third position ahead of Jamie Serra.

South West Masters Teams Report
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 04 March 2010

The South West Masters Teams tournament, sponsored by Muffin Break, returned to Busselton after Bunbury had hosted the event for the past 3 years. The interest was terrific, shown by the 85 players who entered which was a new record for this tournament eclipsing the 77 that played in the 20th anniversary tournament in 2006. Entries were received from Perth, Bunbury and Busselton for the March long weekend event, the first on the Masters Calendar for 2010.

On Saturday night there were 73 players and partners who all went out for dinner at the Jade Restaurant. On the night there was a presentation to all the players who had played 10 or more times in the SW Masters event. (Kelvin Carmichael 10, Linda McBrierty and Jennifer Brindley 11, Ken Pember, George Reid & Alison Williams 12, Warren Oliver & Ron Brindley 13, Wayne Evans 14, Moya Credaro  & Rose Buswell 15, Ron Buswell 16, Ron Clayton & Chas Renner 21 and the SW Queen Joyce Barnett 22 out of a possible 24 years !!!)

Four divisions were used for the first time in 4 years with a fixed 3 game format being once again used and was well received considering the hot weather. A round robin was run on Saturday and Sunday with the finals being held on Monday morning followed by the presentation, leaving the afternoon to drive home.

Since the tournaments inception 24 years ago there has been over 430 players and this year there were 19 players playing in the SW Teams Masters for the first time.
